When Dad went home after Christmas lunch, Rob and I played a great card game that Rob got as a pressy from his neice, it's called Mag Blast, and it's a lot of fun. Described as many by quick and brutal, it works very well as a space fleet battle game. The four sides[ of your flagship are considered different zones, and ships in the zones can only fire at ships in the corresponding zones in the enemy fleet. You can only fire ammo if your ship has the right sort of gun. Naturally it seems you can never get the ammo you need at any one time. You can also launch fighters and bombers, which can be useful, very, but do take up space (they fly back to your hand when you're done) and you draw up to a hand limit of five as the second phase of your turn, the first being discards.
And then of course, you have to have a defenseless carrier in play to launch your squadron from...
There is one card that breaks a two player game, so I'm eager to try it multiplayer. I got thrashed 3 times in a row, and I reckon it's because of that stupid Reallocation card. But we shall see.
It's a game of "Screaming Space Battles"! Particularly so that the rules say that any hit is considered a miss if you don't go "Zap" or "Bzzzzt" when you're firing. But it's a good game! It gives you a sense of fleet, and is really easy to learn. The cover art is horrible, but the cards are pretty good quality and the artwork on them is beautiful, some lovely ships!
It also has great potential for varients and hackability - different costs for different ships, customising fleets, etc.
8/10 at the moment, and playing Galactica as the alien fleet on the Sid and Nancy scale.
Reading Game Geek, the rules clarifications state that Reallocation can be blocked with a Temporal Card >:) Tim is SO dead next time I play him!
This game really rocks, to the point that it would replace Alambra as my current new favourite. I would reccomend it to any SF fan who wants a fun, easy to learn and amusing game.
On Sunday we were discussing if any expansions are available. It seems that the 2nd Edition copy of Mag Blast already has an expansion with it. It has four new flagships, new ships, and new action cards that the first edition didn't have. It also added the ship upgrade cards (auxiliary cannons, defense turrets, fighter bays etc.).
