Mild Spoiler Alert mainly concerning character development in a few short pages.
So our copies of Nightsiders turned up early this week, and to give you an impression of Sue's writing, this morning Rob walked over to the table, picked up a copy and casually opened it.
Rob didn't move, except for his eyes and an economical twitch of the fingers, to turn a page for the next 8 minutes. Standing there. Frozen.
He stirred, finally (must have reached the end of the first story) and said ruefully - "I made the mistake of glancing at the first couple of pages." You can't just glance. The mystery, the unsettling feeling of a familiar landscape made terrible and the splintering of society is compelling, and it draws you in, oh it draws you in.
I feel sympatheic towards Kyra, but I'm heartened by her resilience - amazing considering her upbringing - and I'd certainly like to know more of her story. It was terrific watching her evolution from passivity to determination in a few short pages - without contrivance.
Alicia and the Drainers (now that'd be a great band name!) are very cool in a wholesome/scary Uncanny Valley sort of way. It says something when the monsters are the ones you trust first.
I'm rationing myself, this collection isn't something to gobble. This is something to savour. I just read the first story, The Painted Girl over lunch.
And I was about to write "It's so nice to see Perth getting destroyed for once, we always miss out" but then thought better of it.
