I still don't know what caused this but its right through the kevlar strip.
The brown stuff you can see about 1 cm worth of the tyre's fabric from beneath the rubber sticking out of the tyre.
And it was like this when I discovered the puncture (ie heard the "pop" followed by the "hisssss"...) |

Here's a look at the inside of the tyre.
I even remembered to resize the image to make it smaller! |

The noise it made was fairly impressive as well.
A closer look at the tyre is showing serious wear in a number of spots, I guess 3000Kms of hard use made a difference.
It was also the left front tyre, so the one that tends to be closer to the gutter and the worst of the junk on the road...

3k km use, hmm? I guess I should start worrying about the tires on my electric, then. They're up to 3.5k. Mind you, the tread on them is still looking OK.

I think you should be OK for a while yet.
1. I try to keep my centreline about where you would when riding: which means your tyres are probably getting the same wear as my rear tyre & are dealing with less junk to trigger punctures. Conversely my left tyre is closer to the gutter, with more junk to deal with.
2. 16" tyres. Good ones are kind of thin on the market. Greenspeed had to make their own to get ones they were happy with. And there's less material to work with - one of the 'bent dealers here was saying recently that you can get better performance/puncture resistance even at 20". If your wheels are larger again (say fairly standard 700s) then you've probably got some economies of scale on your side to deliver longer lasting tyres.
3. Trikes steer rather than lean into turns so that possibly puts more wear again on the front tyres of a tadpole. |
